The Peak District National Park was the first National Park to be established in Britain (in 1951) and acted as a prototype for many others in other countries.

The Peak District contains two distinct areas, characterised by the different type of rock found in each. Rivendale lies in the heart of the White Peak, so-called because of the white limestone from which the dramatic cliffs, gorges and hills of this region have been forged.

Visitors unfamiliar with the area will be amazed at the diversity of things to do and see - from some of the UK's finest stately homes to the industrial past of the Derwent Valley Textile Industry (now a World Heritage Site) the theme parks at Matlock Bathand Alton Towers, Opera and Arts Festivals at Buxton, and the wide range of outdoor pursuits - from climbing and caving to hang-gliding and hot air ballooning.

The caravan park benefits from an elevated position on a ridge separating Dove Dale and Biggin Dale from Eaton and Alsop Dale - providing the perfect location from which to explore the beautiful scenery of all four dales on footpaths running directly from the park.

The Tissington, High Peak and Manifold cycle trails lie within 100 yards and a few miles respectively of Rivendale providing the perfect means to explore the area by bike on easy gradients, without traffic hazards.

How to get there

By car.

Rivendale Park entrance is directly off the main Ashbourne to Buxton road (the A515) approximately 2.5 miles south of Newhaven and 6.5 miles north of Ashbourne. The entrance is on the Right Hand side as you head north. The access road is a gentle easy slope that should present no problems even when wet.

By train and Cycle/Foot

The nearest station is Cromford about 13 miles east of Rivendale. However, access by cycle (or on foot) is a real possibility as The High Peak Trail runs within a mile of Cromford station and within a few miles of Rivendale. The final few miles can be linked by either The Tissington Trail or quiet back lanes. Both the Tissington and High Peak Trails were former railway lines and benefit from good going and easy gradients through rolling hills with interesting historical and geological diversions along the way.
